Stuart began to learn the skills he would need for his venture into sustainable energy at the age of 14, when he worked as an apprentice and journeyman in the electrical, plumbing and masonry fields. After obtaining a degree in Business Administration at York University in Toronto, Stuart was selected to become an intern at the Solar Living Institute in Hopland, California.
While living at the Institute, considered by many as the birth place of the American solar industry, Stuart gained real-world experience of energy conservation and efficiency, solar water heating and solar electricity generation technologies, while teaching part-time. Stuart also worked for a leading solar electric company, Real Goods Solar, where he installed a range of grid-tied and battery based solar electricity generation systems.
Upon returning to Bermuda in 2010, Stuart quickly set about installing a solar electricity generation system on his family home, the last step in obtaining the industry-honoured NABCEP photovoltaic installer certification. After establishing his own energy efficiency and solar business, EMPower, Stuart discovered he shared the same passion and business ethic with BE Solar and chose to partner with the company and has since helped to design and install hundreds of solar energy systems across Bermuda and overseas.
Travis was inspired from a young age by his grandfather to pursue a career in sustainable energy. After attending Florida Institute of Technology to obtain a degree in Ocean Engineering, Travis became an ABYC Certified Master Technician, expanding his knowledge of marine AC/DC electronics, refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Returning to Bermuda, Travis moved aboard a small schooner where he lived ‘off-grid’ for two years, powered by a wind turbine. In 2009, with energy prices steadily climbing upward, Travis decided it was time to apply his knowledge to provide residents of Bermuda with energy audits and energy efficiency advice, before quickly expanding into solar water heating and solar electricity generation systems.
Travis’s background in ocean engineering and marine systems continue to be reflected in the design and installation of BE Solar’s solar energy systems, which are built tough enough to withstand Bermuda’s harsh maritime climate.
